Sears adds a wrinkle to book price war

October 20th, 2009, 8:13 am · Post a Comment · posted by Bill Radford

This week’s “book wars” took an interesting turn today with an unusual offer by Sears Holdings. Amazon, Wal-Mart and Target have all announced they’re selling some of the season’s most anticipated books for $8.99 online. Now Sears wants to “reward you for reading,” even if you buy books from those competitors. Buy select “top pre-selling books” listed at www.sears.com/readamerica from Amazon, Wal-Mart or Target, then e-mail the receipt to Sears and get an online credit equal to the purchase price (up to $9) toward the purchase of any merchandise of $45 or more on Sears.com. “It’s like getting a book for free,” the Web site trumpets. You get a similar offer of $9 off when you buy one of the books through Sears.com. But since they’re selling the 10 books for $17.98 each instead of their competitors’ $8.99, that offer may not get as much traction.
